Nicholas Kaiser

Nicholas Kaiser MBA, CFA
Chairman

Nicholas Kaiser was born in Bellingham in 1946. Mr. Kaiser graduated from Yale College, with a degree in economics and obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1968, with dual majors in International Economics and Finance. Mr. Kaiser purchased control of Unified Management Corporation (Indianapolis) in 1976, and built it into a mid-sized investment management and brokerage firm. After selling Unified to a major insurance company, he returned to Bellingham in 1989.

Mr. Kaiser and his family control Saturna Capital through its voting stock. A Chartered Financial Analyst, he is Saturna Capital's Research Director. He serves Saturna's mutual funds as trustee, president and equity portfolio manager.

Mr. Kaiser's industry activities include service with the Investment Company Institute (past Governor), CFA Institute (past chapter president), Financial Planning Association (past chapter president), and No-Load Mutual Fund Association (past national president). His volunteer activities include Mt. Baker Council of the Boy Scouts of America (past council president), St. Paul's Academy (past board president), Shawnigan Lake School (board of govenors), Fourth Corner Economics Club (founder), and Saturna Recreation Centre. He established the Kaiser Professorship in International Business at Western Washington University, and enjoys sailing, skiing, architecture, programming, politics and history.

Kenenth Cain

Kenneth Cain MBA, CTFA, CISP
President, Saturna Trust Company

Kenneth Cain, President, joined Saturna in July 2008. Mr. Cain has more than 25 years experience in the delivery of personal trust and employee benefit trust services, personal financial planning services, estate planning and wealth management. Before joining Saturna, he was Senior Vice President of Trust and Wealth Management Services at Renasant Bank. Prior to that, he was manager of Trust and Wealth Management Division of First National Bank, Kokomo, Indiana. He is experienced in the administration of a variety of Trust types, retirement accounts, and decedents' estates.

Mr. Cain graduated from the University of North Florida with a degree in finance and earned an MBA from the University of Florida. He is also a graduate of the Florida Trust School at the University of Florida where he was an honor graduate and president of his class. He is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor and a Certified IRA Services Professional — designations awarded by the Institute of Certified Bankers of the American Bankers Association. Mr. Cain retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1993 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Cain and his wife, Sharon, have two daughters and two grandchildren.

Meredith Ross

Meredith Ross MBA, CTFA
Vice President & Chief Operations Officer

Meredith Ross was Saturna Capital's first employee in 1989. She is also a Director of Saturna's discount brokerage subsidiary. She serves investors for Saturna, directing account relationships. Originally from eastern Oregon, Mrs. Ross graduated from Oregon State University in education then earned her MBA from the University of Utah in 1980. Her work experience includes banking, trust operations, insurance, and brokerage operations. Active in boating, Meredith serves on the boards of the Bellingham Yacht Club and the Bellingham Sister Cities Association.

Robin Foote

Marion R. ("Robin") Foote MBA
Independent Director

Robin Foote is a managing director of Novantas, a New York City based management consulting firm focused on banking.

Previously, Robin was Group Executive Vice President and Head of Relationship Marketing at Bank of America (San Francisco). Before joining Bank of America, Robin worked in senior capacities at First Chicago Retail Bank, where she managed several divisions including those serving affluent Chicagoans, consumer loans, local credit cards, mortgages and housing rehabilitation.

Robin is a broadly experienced bank executive, having led a variety of initiatives to accelerate revenue growth and reduce operating expense, the combination of which contributed more than $1 billion in recurring bottom-line benefits over the course of her banking career.

Robin graduated magna cum laude from Smith College in 1967 and with High Distinction from the Harvard Business School in 1969.

She is an advisory director of privately-held Diacor, Inc. She is a former director of CFSBdirect (now E*Trade) and chaired its Audit and Compensation Committees while it had public ownership. She currently serves on the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation board, and is that organization’s treasurer. Dividing her time between residences in Bellingham WA and San Francisco CA, she is an avid mountain climber and reader who also enjoys music and the arts.

Jane Carten

Jane Carten is Director and President of Saturna Capital, which she joined in June 1997. Ms. Carten graduated from Western Washington University with an MBA and undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Business. As President, Jane oversees Saturna's daily operations and directs Saturna's internal and external information systems, managing the technology and marketing activities. She also directs Saturna’s continuing education program and the philanthropic efforts of the firm. Ms. Carten is active in the Bellingham Bay Rotary; she is a former member of the Whatcom Museum Children's Advisory Board. She is a founder and former director of the nonprofit OpenAccess Internet Services and is a Bellingham Sister Cities member and contributor. She enjoys her family, snow-boarding, and wildlife, as well as international travel and fine and theatre arts.

 

James Winship

James D. Winship MBA, JD

Mr. James Winship has more than 35 years experience in the securities and financial business, with almost 20 years dedicated to the mutual fund and advisory business, including service with the Investment Company Institute (past Governor). A 1970 Northwestern University graduate, Jim earned a JD, cum laude, from Northwestern University Law School in 1973 and an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1976. From 2000 through 2003, he served as Adjunct Professor to the University of Washington School of Business. Since 2004, Jim has served as Chief Compliance Officer for the adviser and its affiliated mutual funds, and most recently as General counsel. Jim is director and treasurer of the Marge Williams Center and enjoys reading, traveling, and music.

Jim Gibson

Jim Gibson CPA
Treasurer & Chief Financial Officer

Jim Gibson joined Saturna in April 2007. Mr. Gibson graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (Magna Cum Laude, 1981). He was born in California in 1959, and has been a Washington resident for the last 12 years. Mr. Gibson began his career in public accounting at Arthur Andersen, then spent several years in a regional public accounting firm. He has over 10 years experience as controller, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer at different multi-national companies, both public and privately owned, based in Western Washington. He served on the Board of Directors (past president) of Current Industries, a non-profit organization that provided innovative employment opportunities to people with disabilities. His favorite activities include spending time with his wife and three children, boating, fishing and attending his children’s various and numerous athletic events.

Monem Salam

Vice President (Islamic Investing)

Monem Salam was born in Pakistan in 1972. Raised in Texas, Mr. Salam received his degrees from the University of Texas: BA (Austin) and MBA (Dallas). He worked as Chief Investment Officer for ITG & Associates (Dallas) until 1999, then as a representative with Morgan Stanley (suburban Dallas) until joining Saturna Capital in June 2003. Monem is active with the Muslim community in North America and current Chairman of Peaceful Communications, a non-profit organization which completed a documentary called "On A Wing and A Prayer." Monem has spoken to more than 300 Islamic Communities about spirituality, seerah, and Islamic investing over the past three years. Monem continues to speak and chair Islamic Finance/Investment Conferences Worldwide. Recently, Monem received the "20 Rising Stars" Award from Institutional Investor News. The award is given to 20 leaders in the mutual fund industry, under 40, who the magazine feels will change in the industry in a positive way in the next 10 years.

Lisa Ray

Lisa Ray
Assistant Vice President (Employee Benefit Plans)

Lisa Ray joined Saturna Capital in December, 2005. Ms. Ray earned a BA in Economics and a BS in Mass Communication from Miami University in 1997. Prior to joining Saturna, she served as an education policy analyst. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering, hiking, reading, and cooking.

 

 

G. Scott Stroh

Scott Stroh JD
Compliance Officer

Scott Stroh joined Saturna Capital in March 2006. Prior to joining Saturna, Scott was in a private practice where he focused on products liability litigation. Previously, he worked as a chemical engineering consultant and a research fellow. He received his JD in 2005 from Lewis & Clark Law School, and his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington in 2000. He enjoys spending time with his family and recreational flying.
